Response to Recall Attempt #2
Sonora Elementary is fully staffed for the first time since COVID. With the hard work put in by staff last year, we are projecting a 5% increase in ELA test scores. We are working hard to create a positive experience for kids. During my tenure, we accomplished several major projects, including a new gymnasium, an eight classroom building, and a new play structure.
In the past year, Sonora Elementary has produced over 6,000 pages of record requests, probably costing in excess of $50,000. Many of those records were delivered to people involved with this recall yet none of that information was used. If this petition is successful, the school will get to pay for a special election and signature verification.
I am serving my third unopposed term. Most meetings are generally quiet. Last fall, the board gave the superintendent a positive evaluation and approved a modest contract extension. Concerns were raised and we engaged the County Superintendent of Schools to help facilitate discussions. While we still have work to do, meaningful changes have been implemented, and things are improving.
I remain committed to supporting students, teachers, and families, and ensuring Sonora Elementary continues to grow in a positive direction.
Response to Recall Attempt #1
Sonora Elementary is fully staffed for the first time since COVID, and we are moving forward with a positive school year. During my tenure, we have completed major improvements, including a new gymnasium, a new eight classroom building, and a new play structure.
I am serving my third unopposed term on the board. Most meetings post COVID have been quiet, with only a few staff present. Last fall, the entire board gave the superintendent a positive evaluation and approved a modest extension, which is a common practice. That decision raised concerns from some in the community, so we immediately engaged the County Superintendent of Schools to help identify and address those issues. Since then, meaningful improvements have been made. There are also people who support the superintendent, including some who have since moved on, but speaking up publicly can risk ruining relationships in this divided environment.
A special recall election would cost the district a significant amount of money just months before the regular election, when three seats will already be on the ballot. In my opinion those funds would be better spent on students and staff. Campaigning during the regular election also allows for positive messaging rather than more division.
I remain committed to supporting students, teachers, and families, and ensuring Sonora Elementary continues to grow in a positive direction.
